Kavya & Siddharth’s Joyful Surprise at Ciutadella Park

Introduction

Autumn mornings in Barcelona have a special kind of magic. On one of the first cold mornings of October, the sun spilled through the trees of Parc de la Ciutadella and painted everything golden. I met Kavya and Siddharth on the quiet, right‑hand side of the park’s famous fountain for what she thought was a simple couples session. Siddharth was nervously clutching a ring, and Kavya had no idea of the surprise to come. As we chatted and laughed, I offered to snap a quick selfie of them using their phone — our secret cue. While Kavya smiled at the camera, Siddharth slipped to one knee and asked her to marry him. Her joyful “yes” echoed across the empty plaza, and in that moment the crisp air felt warm. We spent the rest of the morning wandering through the park’s pathways, soaking in the sun and their newly engaged glow.

The BarcelonaLoversPH Approach

I love photographing proposals because they are a delicate balance of planning and spontaneity. For Siddharth’s surprise, we mapped out the exact spot and timing ahead of time. On the day, my goal was to make them feel comfortable and to let their story unfold naturally. When Siddharth started to feel his nerves, I reminded him to breathe and focus on his love for Kavya. When the big moment came, I stepped back so it felt like an intimate memory instead of a staged event. Afterward, we celebrated by strolling through the park, letting the newly engaged couple bask in each other’s smiles. I prompted them with gentle suggestions — “hold her hand as you walk,” “tell him what you’re most excited about” — but mostly I encouraged them to forget about the camera and simply be present. This is the heart of the barcelonaloversph style: genuine moments, candid laughter and a warm, bubbly tone that feels more like reliving a memory than posing for photos.

Location Spotlight

Parc de la Ciutadella

  • From fortress to public park: Ciutadella Park sits on the former site of a vast military citadel built by King Philip V in 1715 to control the city. Its construction demolished more than 1,000 homes in the La Ribera neighbourhood. In 1869 General Prim handed the citadel over to the city on the condition that it become a public park. Volunteers demolished most of the fortress, leaving only the chapel, the Governor’s Palace and the arsenal — now the seat of the Catalan Parliament.
  • Barcelona’s green lung: The park, created at the end of the 19th century, became Barcelona’s first public park and a much‑needed “green lung” where locals could breathe and stroll. The space covers about 17‑18 hectares and remains a beloved oasis in the centre of the city.
  • Universal Exhibition legacy: Architect Josep Fontseré designed the park’s layout and later adapted it for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Reminders of that era still stand: the Castell dels Tres Dragons (originally the exhibition’s restaurant), the Umbracle and Hivernacle plant houses, and the lake and waterfall. The Barcelona Zoo has been located on one side of the park since 1892 and the Catalan Parliament occupies the former military arsenal.
  • Cascada Monumental: One of the park’s most iconic features is the Cascada Monumental, a grand fountain inspired by the Trevi Fountain. It was designed by Fontseré with the help of a young Antoni Gaudí, who developed the hydraulic systems and crafted decorative elements. The cascade features sculptures of the Birth of Venus at its centre, a quadriga (four‑horse chariot) of Aurora at the top, and groups of geniuses, fauns, Eros and Neptune around the basin. Gaudí also adorned the pool with winged dragons.
  • Open‑air museum: Ciutadella is dotted with artworks. You’ll see the equestrian statue of General Prim, bronze tributes to Catalan volunteers, and numerous busts. Two sculptures have become beloved symbols of the park: the Stone Mammoth, a life‑size woolly mammoth where children (and adults) love to climb, and the Umbrella’s Lady, which crowns an ornamental fountain designed by Fontseré.
  • Family‑friendly activities: For a leisurely morning, visitors can rent rowboats on the artificial lake and glide under the willows. The same lake forms the basin of the Cascada Monumental. Nearby, the Barcelona Zoo and play areas make the park a favourite for families. According to the city’s tourism board, a giant mammoth and a bandstand delight children, and the park covers an area of about 18 hectares. It’s easy to spend hours exploring its tree‑lined promenades, sculptures and historic buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time to propose at Ciutadella Park?

Early morning during autumn is ideal. The park is quieter and the light is soft, making it perfect for an intimate proposal. In October, the air is crisp and the trees start to show fall colours. If morning isn’t possible, consider a weekday late afternoon when crowds are thin and the golden light around the lake adds romance.

How do you plan a surprise proposal without giving it away?

Work closely with your photographer to choose a location and create a simple cue. In this session, the cue was offering to take a selfie. Make sure your partner is comfortable — suggest a casual photo session or a walk so they don’t suspect anything. Most importantly, focus on your connection; when the moment comes, speak from the heart and let the photographer capture everything naturally.
